A roadworker has suffered serious head injuries after he was hit by a ute on the M1 Motorway at Berowra, north of Sydney, early this morning, causing severe traffic delays.

Both southbound and northbound lanes were closed for several hours after the worker was hit just after 3am, and motorists were diverted onto the Pacific Highway at Windybanks Interchange.

Both lanes have since re-opened, however heavy traffic remains very heavy in both directions on the M1 and on the Pacific Highway.

"Motorists are also advised to exercise caution and reduce speed as emergency services and traffic crews remain on the shoulder of the road between Berowra Interchange and Windybanks Interchange," The Transport Management Centre said in a statement.

Police said the 28-year-old worker was hit in the breakdown lane after a ute drove between the roadwork safety vehicle and the rock wall.

The worker was taken to the Royal North Shore Hospital.

The 72-year-old driver of the ute was also been taken to hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing and was treated for a head injury.

The Crash Investigation Unit is investigating.
