Designs for new First Nations-led park in heart of Sydney revealed

Designs for a new First Nations-led park in the heart of Sydney have been revealed after a word-wide design competition was held.

The empty concrete slab will be transformed into a "regenerated natural retreat" called Harbour Park at the headland of Barangaroo Reserve, to compliment the 14 kilometre walk from Glebe to Woolloomooloo.

The winning design by AKIN will have 1.85 hectares of open space and will allow "nature play for all ages and abilities", a lawn space for hosting events with up to 6000 people and public art.

Acting premier Prue Car said announcing the winner was a massive milestone.

"Harbour Park is on the traditional lands of the Gadigal, who have been the custodians of the land and waterways for millennia," Car said.

"The park continues the precinct's commitment to honouring the role of First Nations people, the history of the site and its wider context."

"The new park will be an inclusive, family friendly place, with experiences for all ages and abilities.

"I am looking forward to seeing this incredible design come to life."

The plans will go to community consultation before the planning and procurement process begins.
