Sydney man unwittingly plummets from bridge after exiting crashed car hanging over edge

A Sydney man has fallen almost ten metres from a rail bridge after getting out of a crashed car, not realising it was teetering in mid-air.

Cheol Choi, 24, and Junil Byeon, 23, were travelling in a BMW in Lidcombe, in the city’s west, when it veered from the road and ploughed through a fence on a rail bridge.

The sedan just centimetres from plummeting over the edge, Mr Choi unwittingly stumbled from the passenger door.

The Korean student was seriously injured in the fall down the cliff face and had to be stabilised by arriving paramedics.

He was taken to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition and the driver of the car, Mr Byeon, followed suit with minor injuries.

Police said the cruel twist highlighted the varying dangers on our roads.

“(The car could have landed) upside down onto those rail track, quite possibly killing these two young men,” Inspector Phil Brooks from the Crash Investigation Unit said.

“These two young men are lucky to be alive.”

Investigators will focus on how fast the BMW was traveling moments before the crash.
