Sydney man to face new one-punch law

A man accused of fatally striking a young Sydney man at a house party is the first person to be charged under the state's new one-punch legislation.

Raynor Tristan Castillo Manalad, 21, was allegedly punched in the face outside a house party in Minchinbury in Sydney's west in the early hours of Saturday.

The nursing graduate fell to the ground and lost consciousness before being rushed to Westmead Hospital.

He died on Sunday evening.

Shortly after the party, police arrested 21-year-old Hugh Garth and charged him with multiple offences, including grievous bodily harm with intent.

During a brief court appearance at Blacktown Local Court on Wednesday, Garth became the first person in NSW to be charged with assault causing death while intoxicated.

It is the first time the so-called one-punch legislation has been used since being introduced by the state government earlier this year.

Under the legislation, offenders who throw a fatal punch while intoxicated will now spend a minimum of eight years behind bars.

Garth, who did not apply for bail, has been remanded in custody and will next appear at Penrith Local Court on July 11.
