'Babe, get down': Man shot dead at Sydney unit saved girlfriend's life

The girlfriend of a man killed in a targeted shooting at a western Sydney unit complex said he saved her life by screaming at her to get down as the gunmen arrived.

Jimmy Alayan, 40, was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the complex on Gundaroo Street, Villawood, just after 9pm on Saturday.

"We were together, he had his arm around me and we were standing there," the woman, who has asked not to be identified, told 9NEWS.

"Then he said, 'babe, get down,' and he just got shot instead of me.

"If he hadn't done that, I would have been shot for sure."

Three shots were fired. Two of those shot Mr Alayan, his girlfriend said.

"It should have been me," she said.

"He saved me, 100 percent."

Paramedics arrived to find Mr Alayan in his girlfriend's arms.

He died at the scene, despite their best efforts.

Friend, Matt Fleming, said he was not aware of Mr Alayan having any enemies.

"I've never seen him have a problem with anybody, everybody gets along with him well," Mr Fleming told 9NEWS.

Today, police confirmed no arrests had yet been made, and urged witnesses to come forward. 

They called for further information about three men and a silver or grey sedan seen in the area at the time of the shooting.
