Man charged by counter-terrorism officers in Sydney after improvised explosive device, two rifles allegedly found in car

A man from Sydney's inner west has been charged by counter-terrorism officers after an improvised explosive device and two rifles were allegedly found in a car.

Police and emergency services were called to Hill Street in Strathfield on February 27 following reports of a suspicious car on the street. 

Police allege a search of the car uncovered the two rifles and an improvised explosive device, which was safely dismantled by the Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit. 

The car had allegedly stolen from the nearby suburb of Chullora.

A 41-year-old man was subsequently arrested by officers from the Joint Counter Terrorism Team yesterday. 

He was served with a firearms prohibition order and a weapons prohibition order. 

He was taken to Burwood Police Station and later charged with two counts of possessing unauthorised firearms; possession, supply, or making explosives; and carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner.

He was refused bail to appear in the Burwood Local Court today.
