Sydney man charged over alleged terror plot uncovered in 2014 raids

A 24-year-old man has been arrested in relation to the alleged planning of a terrorist attack on sites in Sydney.

Farhad Said was arrested outside his Bankstown home this morning by members of the Joint Counter Terrorism Team, as part of the ongoing Operation Appleby. 

A joint media release from the Australian Federal Police and NSW Police said he had been arrested in connection to documents seized in a counter-terrorism raid in December 2014. 

"There is no new threat to the community as part of today’s activity," the statement read. 

"It will be alleged in court the man was one of a number of people – who have been previously charged regarding this matter - involved in formulating documents connected with preparations to facilitate, assist or engage a person to undertake a terrorist act."

Several others have been charged over the alleged plot, which police say was uncovered on handwritten notes during the 2014 raids.

The Garden Island naval base and AFP headquarters are believed to have been possible targets.

Said was today charged with one count of conspiracy to conduct an act in preparation for a terrorist act.

His lawyer, Muhammad Tehseldar, requested that Said not face Central Local Court either in person or by video link this afternoon, and made no application for bail on his behalf.
