A man has been charged after allegedly shooting his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend in the leg in Sydney's west last night, in what police said was a love triangle gone wrong.

Police said a 32-year-old entered the home of his ex-partner in Cambridge Gardens where she was staying with her current boyfriend.

The confrontation quickly escalated when the woman's current partner - a 42-year-old - allegedly got a sawn-off shotgun and fired two shots.

"Police are alleging the incident is in relation to a love triangle between some parties which obviously escalated significantly to what transpired last night," Acting Superintendent Jason Pietruszka said.

Police arrived at the home on Richmond Road around 11.15pm to find the 34-year-old had been shot in the leg.

"What happened leading up the incident is still being investigated however it quickly escalated to the point where individual involved, the male before the court, took matters into his own hands quite dangerously putting people in the area at risk by firing a weapon in a public street," Mr Pietruszka said.

Neighbours told 9News said they heard the commotion from next door.

"We had gone to bed, then I heard two shots, then we see two people just fighting, one of them was limping," Wissam Jhenem said.

"Was it scary? Yes. That's first time that happened on this street, like shooting."
