A Sydney lawyer who made a $700,000 compensation claim after a car accident has been charged by police.

Amadu Bangura has been charged with attempting to dishonestly obtain an advantage by deception, following the accident which he says left him too traumatised to work.

However, police allege the only damage was a dent to Mr Bangura's rear bumper.

Mr Bangura claims his white Ford Falcon was written off by the accident, but police allege surveillance shows him driving the car with no apparent issue after the accident.

In his submission to Allianz Insurance, Mr Bangura said he was suffering from a number of physical ailments following the accident, as well as from shock, anxiety and depression.

He has also claimed his brother had been killed in a car accident in Sierra Leone, saying he now felt cursed.

However, police have alleged the 30-year-old provided false information during eight doctors' appointments, and told the court Mr Bangura's siblings are alive and well in Australia.

Criminal lawyer Loopka Subeska said if Mr Bangura was found guilty, as a lawyer he could expect a harsher punishment.

Mr Bangura will appear in court in August.
