Sydney ferries stop for four hours

Sydney ferries will stop for four hours on Thursday as navigators and engineers meet over workplace conditions.

Members of the Australian Institute of Marine & Power Engineers (AIMPE) will cease work from 10am to 2pm for an update on the latest round industrial talks with employer Harbour City Ferries.

Workers had been offered a one per cent pay increase, up from zero at previous rounds.

"The company receives inflation adjustments every year in their contract (from the government) and they can't even pass on an inflation adjustment to their workers," AIMPE organiser Joe Fallone told AAP from the meeting.

"They're offering one per cent when they're getting inflation adjustment of 2.9 per cent."

The workers represented by the AIMPE maintain and navigate ferries.

Despite the tensions between management and staff, Mr Fallone said the AIMPE meeting was deliberately held outside peak hours.

"We're doing the best we can not to affect commuters," Mr Fallone said.

The Maritime Union of Australia last week reached a deal with Harbour City Ferries after a series of industrial actions, including refusing to sell tickets.
