A large plume of black smoke was visible across Sydney after a car wrecking yard in the city's west went up in flames.

Up to 75 firefighters were sent to the business on Larra Street in Yennora on Wednesday afternoon as thick smoke poured from the building and flames engulfed scrapped vehicles.

"This fire was being fuelled by a mass of stored vehicles collected for wrecking, a number of tyres, automotive fuels and coils," Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Ian Krimmer said.

"A very hot fire; a huge ball of smoke was visible right across the Sydney metropolitan area.

"But to the credit of firefighters they got here quickly and they've contained this fire very rapidly."

The blaze was brought under control and prevented from spreading to neighbouring factories about 5.30pm.

Firefighters were expected to stay on the scene well into the night battling small blazes.

No one was hurt during the incident.
