The man accused of escaping from a Sydney court last week, after jumping from the dock and assaulting two officers, has been charged.

Ali Chahine was answering bail breach allegations at Downing Centre District Court on Wednesday afternoon when he allegedly jumped from the dock, assaulted two officers and jumped on a bus barefoot.

The 33-year-old was arrested this morning and taken to Redfern Police Station.

Police allege they found the escapee inside a Newton Street home about 7am. Officers from the Central Metropolitan Region Operation Support Group were called in after Chahine allegedly refused to surrender.

He taken to St Vincent’s Hospital, where he was treated for a pre-existing condition, a police spokesman said.

He was charged with escaping lawful custody, and two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm will appear before Parramatta Local Court via video link today.
