Commuters stranded with Sydney bus drivers on strike this morning

Sydney commuters are facing more disruption today as bus drivers walk off the job.

The 24-hour strike began at midnight and is active across the city.

Commuters in the Inner West, Hills district, and parts of south, north, and western Sydney, have been warned to avoid public transport today.

More than 1000 drivers will walk off the job amid a pay dispute with private bus operators.

The NSW government has called on those companies to take responsibility for the strike and come to terms with drivers, even as it looks to hire private coaches in an attempt to fill the gap.

"They took on these contracts with those rates, and therefore we're saying it's up to them to fix," Transport For NSW chief operating officer Howard Collins told the Sydney Morning Herald.

However, NSW Transport Workers Union secretary Richard Olsen said the state government should enforce an industry standard for pay and working conditions.

He said bus drivers often faced non-working amenities and facilities at interchanges.

Commuters are urged to allow for extra time as services run to a reduced timetable, while some have been cancelled altogether.
