Man charged and bailed for spraying a bus driver in the face in Sydney with mouth spray

A man has been charged after a bus driver was sprayed in the face with a chemical in Sydney.

The State Transit Authority (STA) bus was travelling along Oxford Street when the driver stopped between Flinders and Crown Streets on December 27 at 10.35pm.

As the bus was full, the driver told a man waiting at the bus stop he could not get on.

Witnesses told police the man began to abuse the driver, before allegedly spraying him in the face with a chemical.

Police say they believe it was mouth spray.

Passengers called triple zero, and the man fled.

The bus driver, a 41-year-old from Hillsdale, was treated at the scene after he struggled to breathe, but he didn’t need to be taken to hospital.

At 11.35am, police arrested a 50-year-old man at a home in Newtown.

He was charged with common assault and granted conditional bail.

He’ll appear in Downing Centre Local Court in late January.
