Sydney expecting smothering smoke amid backburns

More hazard reduction burns are planned for Sydney today, despite out-of-control fires threatening homes in the Northern Beaches over the weekend.

The Rural Fire Service has warned that the city can expect smoky conditions today and maybe into tomorrow.

A bushfire continues to smoulder and burn on the Northern Beaches, which fire crews hope to fully extinguish today in more favourable conditions.

More backburning is expected throughout Sydney today. 9News

There will also be a series of hazard reduction burns across the greater metropolitan area today.

Locations include Northern Road in Penrith, as well as a park in Palm Beach.

Firefighters are hoping for more favourable conditions overall.

While Sydney is still expecting a high of 27 degrees, the wind is expected to pose less danger.

The fire rating is currently "moderate", which is low for the spring season.

The next high fire danger day for Sydney is forecast to be Wednesday.
