Sydney residents caught in David and Goliath fight over Bunnings traffic plan

Parents of a small school in Sydney's Inner West are fighting a David and Goliath battle against a proposed development to build the largest Bunnings store in Sydney.

Concerned residents around Tempe Public School on Union Street are campaigning to have traffic lights installed for the new store, which would prevent large volumes of shopper traffic from travelling along a narrow one-way street adjacent to the school.

Campaigners say they are not against the development of the Bunnings, but feel the store's proposed traffic plan would funnel too much traffic into high-density streets.

"We've been campaigning for so long and no one is listening," Tempe Public school parent Elizabeth Walker said.

"I think the corporates only care about the bottom line."

"It's hard enough getting a car down these streets without knocking everyone's mirrors, let alone potentially having an accident with a child crossing the road," resident Jack Breen said.

The Inner West Council has committed $25,000 to help the cause of campaigners after estimating the current traffic plan would send 1400 cars past the school every day.

Bunnings has said it is working with an independent traffic consultant to come up with the safest possible transport solution.

Transport for NSW say the campaigner's suggestion of installing traffic lights would also be unsafe.
