Sydneysiders have taken to social media to urge each other to boycott a harbourside bar after women were hired to lie naked on tables and act as 'fruit platters'.

Cruise Bar, located at the Sydney Overseas Passenger Terminal in Circular Quay, held the relaunch party on Wednesday night.

"Boycott Sydney Overseas Passenger Terminal cruise bar #sexism #appalling,” tweeted Michaela Hallett.

"Classic misogyny," wrote Sandra Eckersley.

University of Newcastle academic Melanie James first sparked outrage on social media after posting a photo of the 'female fruit platter' to her Twitter page.

"This is the display tonight at the Sydney Overseas Passenger Terminal Cruise Bar - unacceptable. #destroythejoint," she wrote.

Matt de Groot, a newsreader from Sydney radio station Nova FM, who attended the party, said the event also featured near-naked men.

"They were having fun," he tweeted yesterday.

"No one was forced to do anything. There were near equal male/female models. A good night."

The idea was also defended by Myer ambassador Kate Peck, who was at the launch.

"The only way to eat a fruit salad, let's be honest," she said.

Cruise Bar is yet to comment.
