Sydney aquarium launches world-first penguin expedition

Sydney’s Sea Life Aquarium has today launched a world-first penguin expedition just in time for the holidays.

The Penguin Expedition attraction at Sydney’s Darling Harbour features king and gentoo penguins, which upon arrival to their new home, were treated to enrichment activities including popping bubbles and enjoying special fishy treats.

The expedition, inspired by Macquarie Island in the southwest Pacific Ocean, will take visitors on a journey in a raft through the sub-Antarctic environment created for the feathery animals.

The $9 million exhibit is underpinned by a breeding and conservation-focused education program which aims to teach visitors about the issues penguins face, including plastic pollution in oceans.

Rob Smith, Divisional Director of Merlin Entertainments ANZ said he was “thrilled” to officially open the expedition.

“Penguin Expedition is more than a world-first ride,” Mr Smith said in a statement.

“It’s about inspiring our guests to conserve our marine life for future generations and educating them on the simple ways they can make a difference.”

There’s no saying if there will be any new penguin chicks in the near future but the team at Sea Life is hopeful for some eggs.
