Sydney and Brisbane set for Spring scorchers

Sydneysiders and Brisbanites are set to swelter through two balmy spring days today and tomorrow with the warm patch on track for a four-year record.

Forecasters are predicting temperatures around the 30C mark today and Wednesday in both of the capital cities.

Temperatures around central Australia are also expected to be warm, but a cool change will hit the region this evening, a day earlier than the east coast, according to Weatherzone.

People in the Sydney CBD may get a slightly cooler day today, with a maximum of 27C expected – but further west the mercury is looking to rise to 31C.

But the wider Sydney region is looking at temperatures over 30C for Wednesday.

A maximum of 31C is predicted for the city centre, and 33C for the west.

Weatherzone meteorologist Tom Hough said the unseasonably warm days are the result of a cold front which is making its way east.

“It’s moving slowly eastwards with a trough ahead of it, so all the air from inland is being drawn down ahead of the cold front,” he told 9news.com.au.

The warm air is likely to give Sydney’s its “warmest September day in three to five years,” Mr Hough added.

The warmest September day on record was on September 26, 1965, when the mercury rose to 34.6C.

The weather will cool down slight in Brisbane on Thursday but Sydney is in for a massive shock to the system with temperatures set to plummet to 18C.

A prediction of 31C is still “quite a lot warmer” than Sydney’s long-term average of 20C though, Mr Hough said.

And it looks like the entire season could follow a similar trend.

“In terms of temperature, it’s looking to be likely warmer than average through spring,” Mr Hough said.

The long-term spring average for Sydney is 22C.
