The federal government is on the cusp of approving Badgerys Creek as the site for Sydney's second airport.

Federal cabinet will meet on Tuesday to tick off the long-awaited decision, Fairfax Media reports.

Badgerys Creek, some 50km west of Sydney's CBD, has for decades been named as a possible site for a second facility, taking pressure off Kingsford Smith Airport which is restricted by a curfew.

Major political players have reached agreement on the site and cabinet's tick is a foregone conclusion, reads a report by The Sydney Morning Herald.

The NSW government supports the Badgerys Creek site but wants to see adequate federal funding to provide transport links and other essential infrastructure.
