Swell Festival: Sculptures take over Currumbin foreshore

The annual Swell Festival has made a grand return, transforming the Gold Coast's southern foreshore into a vibrant canvas of creativity.

Over the next ten days, the festival expects to attract tens of thousands of visitors to marvel at the artistic expressions from local, national, and international talents.

This year sees a diverse range of artworks on display including colossal knitting needles, a miniature post office and captivating acrobatic performances.

"We've installed over 60 beautiful and amazing artworks along the beach and the ocean walkway," Executive Director Dee Steinfort said.

Steinfort highlighted the festival's commitment to fostering creativity and learning.

"We have lots of kids' workshops and adult masterclasses," she said.

Among the installations is the award-winning sculpture "Shifa," featuring coloured discs that symbolise peace, history, and culture.

Artists like Rae Saheli employ unconventional techniques to convey their messages.

"I create it using a 12-gauge shotgun to be able to use something that people see in a negative and bring out something that is quite feminine, soft, and beautiful," Saheli said.

Jordache Gage draws inspiration from an hourglass, reflecting on the passage of time.

"I like that color can also tell time, through past and present," Gage remarked.

The Swell Festival offers free admission and is open until September 15.
