The substance in a suspicious package that caused the lock-down of the Indonesian embassy in Canberra has been declared safe following expert testing.

Authorities sent a Hazmat truck, four fire tankers, and several police cars to the embassy in Yarralumla and cordoned off the nearby area after the letter containing an unknown substances was received on Monday morning.

The package was taken to ACT Pathology for testing and police said on Tuesday it had been found to be safe.
