Suspected Bali Nine mastermind 'living in luxury' after lottery win

The man suspected of being the mastermind behind the Bali Nine heroin smuggling ring is reportedly living a life of luxury in Sydney after winning a multimillion-dollar lottery payout.

The suspect hit the jackpot, believed to be well over $5 million, about the same time as his syndicate’s lieutenants in Bali, Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, were being sentenced death in 2006, Fairfax Media reports, citing former senior police sources.

The suspect, who is not identified, has previously been the subject of police drug trafficking investigations.

But he has always escaped prosecution and is now believed to have halted his criminal activities after winning the lottery.

Police have never arrested the suppliers, main organisers or financiers of the Bali Nine operation.

Chan and Sukumaran, whose role in the syndicate was to direct Australian drug couriers in Bali, have never revealed who they were working for, citing fear for the safety of their families back in Australia.

But Indonesian authorities have described them as ringleaders in the operation, possibly damaging their chance at a presidential reprieve.

They now await imminent execution.
