Suspect mouthwash recalled

A batch of anti-bacterial mouthwash has been recalled after being linked to infections in two patients at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

The recall has been issued by the Therapeutic Goods Administration and covers the BK 119 batch of Chlorofluor Gel which is widely used in private health care facilities.

Tests on unopened bottles have revealed high levels of the Burkholderia cepacia bacteria which can cause respiratory infections.

SA Health says local public hospitals have stopped using the mouthwash but anyone having a bottle from the contaminated batch should discontinue use.

It says the bacteria poses a low medical risk to healthy people but those with weakened immune systems such as cancer or cystic fibrosis patients, may be susceptible to infections and other health problems.
