Support for Opposition Leader Bill Shorten has fallen to a record low of 27 percent, despite backing for the ALP rising to a four-month high.

The latest Newspoll conducted by The Australian newspaper shows federal Labor has extended its two-party preferred lead by two percentage points in the last fortnight, with the Opposition now leading 53 percent to 47 percent.

Tony Abbott has won back support as preferred prime minister, sitting at 39 percent compared to Mr Shorten's 36 percent.
