Super below 12 pct 'vandalism': Keating

Former prime minister Paul Keating believes it is "economic vandalism" to have a compulsory superannuation guarantee rate of less than 12 per cent in a low inflation environment.

While the former Labor government had a target of reaching 12 per cent by 2019/20 through annual increments from 9.5 per cent presently, the Abbott government has pushed back the timetable to 2025.

"The coalition doesn't like compulsory superannuation. They give you this nonsense: `We believe in choice'. Yeah, the choice to be on the bones of your backside in retirement," the architect of super told a think tank in Sydney on Thursday.
