Sunshine Coast mother forced to relive daughter's death at inquest

A Queensland coroner is examining the death of five-month-old Indiana Hicks who died on her first day at Family Day Care.

Indiana's mother Emma said she was concerned the morning she dropped her daughter at the home of Tracey Cross.

It was the last time Mrs Hicks saw her young daughter alive.

Ms Cross told the Coroner she put Indianna down for a sleep in the afternoon, on her back, wrapped in a bunny rug with her arms tight because she had been told by Mrs Hicks that's the way the five-month-old slept best.

The former home daycare educator said she checked on her several times but the final time she was confronted with a horrifying image.

"(Indianna) was on her tummy, her head was facing the side, it was all red ... she was just so limp," she said.

She reportedly performed CPR immediately and called paramedics.

"I always blamed myself for the death, I even contemplated taking my own life," Ms Cross told the Coroner.

The Coroner is now examining "best sleep practices" for infants aged three to six months.

Indianna was wearing a teething necklace at the time, but Professor Jeanine Young from the SIDS and Kids Advisory Committee said they are not recommended for sleep and "the risks outweighs any benefits".

While a pathologist classed the death as a case of SIDS, an expert report prepared for the inquest could not determine the cause.
