Palaszczuk backflips on Suncorp re-naming bid

After a week of pressure, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has backed down on naming a Suncorp Stadium stand after her late mentor and Labor stalwart Terry Mackenroth.

The Government hasn’t decided whether the stand will be rededicated and if so, to who.

Mr Mackenroth, who died in April, masterminded the refurbishment of the old Lang Park into Suncorp Stadium as sports minister in the Beattie government, and later served as an independent director of the Australian Rugby League and Queensland Rugby League.

LNP leader Deb Frecklington slammed Ms Palaszczuk's original decision, saying it smacked of "hubris".

"Lang Park (Suncorp Stadium) is one of the most iconic and historical grounds in Australia that some of Queensland's most distinguished sports people have graced," Ms Frecklington said.

Ms Palaszczuk said she did not want Mr Mackenroth's family to be hurt by the uproar over her decision, nor for her decision to cause division around a stadium he had loved so much.
