French shipbuilder DCNS has signed an agreement with the University of NSW to work together on advanced secret technologies for Australia's 12 new submarines.

DCNS Australia chief executive Sean Costello said the collaborative work on engineering and marine technologies would operate under stringent security measures.

As part of DCNS's industry plan, the investment in technologies to support Australia's Future Submarine Program would take place in close consultation with the Department of Defence, he said.
