‘Stupid’ delivery couriers caught riding bikes through busy Sydney tunnels
Shocking video of cyclists dicing with death in Sydney’s motorway tunnels has been released in a bid to crackdown on the reckless behaviour.
The latest footage, captured today, shows a cyclist dangerously riding through the Cross City Tunnel and is an addition to the startling number of cyclists putting their lives at risk.
Food delivery services Foodora and Deliveroo riders are among those caught risking their safety, which Roads Minister Duncan Gay slammed as sheer “stupidity”.
“If we can get the message through to them: you’re idiots, stop doing it, and wake up to yourselves,” Mr Gay said.
NSW Police said riding through a tunnel could result in a $253 fine, or cyclists could be slapped with an even larger $2200 if the matter goes to court.
The Sydney Harbour Tunnel, the Lane Cove Tunnel, the Cross City Tunnel, the Eastern Distributor and the M5 East are among the roads where cycling is banned.
Transurban NSW general manager Andrew Head warned cyclists not to risk it.
“There are always eyes on the road. Our control room operators identify these people going through the tunnel, and then we take action,” he said.
Deliveroo said the safety of riders and others on the road “is our main priority”, while Foodora said “breaches of the safe riding policy will result in termination of the rider’s contract”.
It comes as police prepare for a three-day drink and drug-driving crackdown amid the soaring road toll.
This year 332 lives have been lost on the state’s roads, compared to 290 at this time last year.
