More than 300 students in 176 schools across Australia are set to become principals for a day.

The students will take on the leadership role on Wednesday to get a better understanding of what it means to lead a complex organisation that is their school.

The Student Principal for a Day event is in its third year and is co-ordinated by the Principals Australia Institute.

Those taking part will lead an assembly, lesson, or staff meeting, interview a retired principal or school board member or conduct a safety audit.

They will also join in a national online student conversation about leadership.

Organisers say while the day is about having fun, it's also about developing effective leadership skills among Australia's students.
