Student charged over SA school stabbing

A student has been charged with allegedly stabbing a fellow classmate with a knife at a South Australian high school.

Emergency services were called to Renmark High School, in the state's Riverland region about 250km northeast of Adelaide, at 2.40pm (local time) after reports a student had been stabbed.

Paramedics arrived on scene and treated the 17-year-old student who was stabbed, shortly before police arrived and arrested an 18-year-old girl.

The 17–year-old victim was taken to the Berri Hospital in a serious condition.

Shortly after 6pm (local time), she was airlifted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

She remains in a serious but stable condition.

The 18-year-old woman from Paringa has been charged with aggravated assault causing serious harm.

She will also be flown to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for the treatment of a medical condition.

It is expected a bedside hearing will be conducted tomorrrow.

"The school was placed in lockdown today after one of our students stabbed another with a knife," a letter from the school to parents read. 

"We share your shock at this event which we are treating with utmost seriousness. 

"It is our understanding that the incident is the result of a dispute between two students and did not represent a specific threat to the wider school community."

The SA Department of Education said appropriate measures were being put in place. 

"The Department for Education is liaising with the school to ensure appropriate responses are put in place, including counselling and support for students and staff," it said in a statement.

"An assessment is being made as to whether additional security measures are required."
