Strong preliminary magnitude 6.4 earthquake strikes western Argentina

A preliminary magnitude 6.4 earthquake has hit the western region of Argentina.
The quake struck around 5.57pm local time (7.57am AEDT) in western Argentina, just 24 kilometres (km) south-west San Juan, according to the US Geological Survey.
It was a deep earthquake, striking around 115km below the surface.

Tremors were felt across both Argentina and Chile, in San Juan and Santiago.
It is unknown if the quake has caused any damage or if there are causalities.
The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre has confirmed there is no tsunami threat to Australia.
