A man has been killed and two police officers have been seriously injured after a van and a police vehicle collided in Victoria's north.

The van and police car collided on the Murray Valley Highway, at the Stokes Road intersection in Strathmerton about midday, according to Victoria Police.

The driver of the van, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

The police officers have been airlifted to hospital. Nine

Two male police officers, a first constable and detective sergeant, were airlifted to hospital with serious upper-body injuries.

An officer in his 30s was flown to The Alfred hospital in Melbourne, while an officer in his 60s was taken to Shepparton Hospital.

The condition of the older officer has since been downgraded to stable.

Eastern Region Assistant Commissioner Tony Langdon said the police were simply driving to another job when the "tragic accident" occurred.

He said the van was believed to have been travelling at high speed and has urged drivers to take particular care and to reduce their speed on country roads.

Detectives will establish the circumstances surrounding the collision.
