From a young age, Matthew Milat wanted to be just like his famous uncle Ivan – even going so far as to kill like him.

Milat senior had terrorised southern NSW in the 1990s, killing seven backpackers and dumping their bodies in the Belanglo State Forest.

Young Milat followed suit, killing David Auchterlonie in the same forest under the pretence of celebrating the teen’s 17th birthday.

Tonight on Nine’s Inside Story, the full story will be told, with exclusive interviews with a witness to the crime.

A police interview with Milat’s accomplice, Cohen Klein, reveals the motivation behind the brutal axe murder.

“Matt (Milat) told me he just didn’t like David (Auchterlonie) for a while,”  Klein says.

“And he just wanted to do it.”

All these years later, Auchterlonie’s family is still trying to make sense of a senseless crime.

Auchterlonie’s grandfather David recalls a chilling admission from Milat.

“(Matthew) said: ‘I’m a Milat, you know what we do’. It says it all, doesn’t it?”

Inside Story’s ‘Born Bad’ will air tonight at 9pm on Nine.
