Man who rappelled off Brisbane bridge ‘drunk’: police

A man who made a bizarre decision to abseil off Brisbane’s Story Bridge was drunk at the time, police say.

Armed with climbing gear, the man tethered himself to the bridge and began his descent before halting above the water and calling for help.

A police spokesman said the man had snapped some pictures on his phone and commented about how good the view was.

The man was gently lowered to safety by police as crowds watched.

Two lanes across the bridge had to be closed until the man was guided to a police boat waiting on the Brisbane River below.

Police have taken the man into custody.
