Stolen war medals may hold the key to finding out who murdered war veteran Kenneth Handford, who was found dead on his 90th birthday in his Victorian home.

The body of the great-grandfather was found in his bedroom in his rural Springbank home on September 15.

He had been tied up, bashed and robbed, with those responsible taking off with cash and Mr Handford's WWII service medals.

His son Peter Handford broke down as he addressed the media today and pleaded for help in locating the medals.

"At 90 years of age, you should at least be able to see your time out," he said.

Mr Handford also said his father had not talked about the war or his medals often, but had taken them out to show his 10-year-old grandson just three weeks before his death.

"I’m thinking he never put them away," he said.

Police said they believed Mr Handford may have been targeted because he was known to carry cash.

Police are urging anyone who may have relevant information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
