States share child protection information

A national database is being established to stop vulnerable children falling through the cracks when their families move interstate.

Child protection agencies across the country will share information on a centralised platform by the middle of next year.

It will allow caseworkers to have a more extensive and accurate insight into a child's history.

Each year about 330,000 people move interstate in Australia.

Federal government minister Michelle Landry is concerned at-risk families are "evading the gaze" of those who have a duty to protect them.

"Vulnerable children are often at heightened risk of harm if their background in a previous jurisdiction is not known, or not easily accessible, to child protection authorities in their new location," the assistant minister for children and families said on Thursday.
