A man has been charged after an alleged stabbing attack on a co-worker in Sydney's inner-south.

Emergency services were called to the corner of Bourke and Doody Street in Alexandria, following reports a man had been stabbed.

"Colleagues detained the offender and held him on the ground while one of the other workers grabbed some ties and bound the man while waiting for police," NSW Police Superintendent Andrew Holland told 9News.

The 23-year-old victim was treated for multiple stab wounds and taken to St Vincents Hospital in a serious condition.

One avenue police are investigating is whether the alleged attacker was being bullied before lashing out at his co-worker.

He was arrested at the scene and taken to Mascot Police Station for questioning.

He has now been charged with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was refused bail and will appear at Central Local Court tomorrow morning.
