Men across Melbourne rejoice - you are now free to liberate your ankles and expose them to some spring sunshine come race day.

The Victorian Racing Club has loosened their tie and changed their stringent member rules to allow the ankle skin to be shown on men.

As women’s hem lines grow ever shorter the announcement may now be a fashion revolution for men.

"The change to our dress regulations recognises our customers' fashion-forward tastes and reflects our awareness of sartorial trends," VRC said in a statement.

Not since 1965 when Jean Shrimpton wore a dress above her knee has there been such controversy.

But for those who prefer socks with their pants, the VRC says other guidelines will remain the same including the ban on taking off your jacket in spring.
