Car smashes into power pole and fire hydrant

A man been cut free from his car after losing control and smashing it into a power pole and fire hydrant in Melbourne this afternoon.

The crash on Springvale Road, just after 4.30pm, sent a stream of water gushing into the air.

A female passenger was able to escape the vehicle but the male driver has been taken to hospital.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
