Spike in the number of Victorian drownings prompts safety warning

New figures have revealed an alarming spike in the number of drowning deaths in Victoria this summer.

The number of fatalities have nearly doubled compared to the same period last year, prompting authorities to issue a safety warning.

“We’ve had four years of increasing drowning trends after a long period where the drowning trend was in fact coming down,” a Life Saving Victoria spokesman said.

Since the start of December there have been 11 drowning deaths in Victoria, nearly doubling the six deaths for the same time last year.

The figures are also well above the average summer drowning levels of seven and residents are urged to play it safe this Australia Day long weekend, Emergency Services Minister Jane Garrett said.

“Enjoy the time, enjoy the barbeques, enjoy the beach cricket but alcohol and swimming don’t mix,” she said.

There have already been three drowning deaths in Victoria this year and strong swells and variable winds are predicted across the state this weekend.
