Perth teen's lucky escape after Speedway crash

A teenager from Mundijong in Perth's south, has had a lucky escape after crashing his car into a concrete wall during a speedway race.

Kurtis Blackburn was competing in the Tom Greene Gold Cup at the Ellenbrook Speedway yesterday afternoon when he lost control of the vehicle.

"Just a bit of driver error, I touched the soft stuff and couldn't get away from it," he told 9News.

The 16-year-old felt a sharp stabbing pain in his neck seconds after the crash.

Emergency services rushed over to help with initial fears he had suffered a serious spinal injury.

The RAC Rescue Helicopter arrived and flew the young tradie to Royal Perth Hospital where he underwent several scans.

"When they said they were bringing in the chopper, I thought: 'that's a bit more serious' so then I started to panic a little bit," his mother Amy Bailey said.

Remarkably, he was cleared of any serious injuries and walked out of hospital today with barely a scratch.

Ms Bailey said they are aware of the risks the sport poses and that's why he was so well prepared.

"Speedways are a pretty safe sport, he's hit the wall a couple times before, not as bad as yesterday," she said.

"He's in a full containment seat, a five-point safety harness, he's got fireproof retardant underwear and suit, his helmet, neck brace, HANS device."

The family says it has received immense support from the community.

"People I don't even know messaging me just asking how Kurtis is and hoping for a speedy recovery," Ms Bailey said.

"I just want to thank them [emergency services] for everything they've done yesterday and ensuring he had the best care possible."

Kurtis hopes to be back on the track within a month, but first he needs a new ride.

"It's a write of- I'm going to get back in the car when I build a new one."
