Southeast Queensland hit by strongest earthquake in nearly a century

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake has struck off Fraser Island, just days after a 5.3 magnitude earthquake hit the same area.

Geoscience Australia said the earthquake struck 119km north-east of Rainbow Beach at a depth of 10km at around 1.38pm (AEST).

It is the strongest earthquake to hit Queensland since 1918, and between 10 and 20 times stronger than Thursday's earthquake.

9NEWS has received reports of the tremor being felt from the Gold Coast to Wide Bay.

Queensland Fire and Emergency said there has been no reports of damage as yet.

Geoscience Australia said a 5.1 magnitude aftershock hit at around 2.46pm not far from where the original quake struck.

The Bureau of Meteorology said there is no tsunami threat.
