South Melbourne church damaged in suspicious fire

A Melbourne church that was believed to be inhabited by squatters has been damaged in a suspicious fire.

Emergency services were called to the vacant church on Park Street in South Melbourne about 8.45am.

Smoke billowed from the roof as crews arrived on the scene.

A Fire Rescue Victoria spokesperson said crews saved a neighbouring apartment building from the blaze.

"FRV crews donned breathing apparatus and began an aggressive attack on the fire," a spokesperson said.

Firefighters searched the church and confirmed no persons were inside, however, there have been reports that squatters inhabited the building.

The fire started in a rear room of the church before extending into the roof space of the main chapel.

The fire caused significant damage.

Police believe the fire was suspicious and an arson chemist will attend later today to determine the cause.
