South-east Queensland braces for weekend of wild weather

South-east Queenslanders are bracing for a weekend of wild weather, with torrential rain, gale-force winds and potentially record-breaking high tides all in the forecast.

The Bureau of Meteorology says up to 200 millimetres of rain could fall across the region, with the potential for some areas to record their December averages within two days.

A low pressure system will move over the south-east on Saturday, with Sunday likely to see the heaviest falls.

"The Gold Coast is going to be the area most impacted by the rain, but we will definitely see impacts from the Sunshine Coast, pretty much south from Fraser Island," Senior Meteorologist Laura Boekel said.

"This rainfall event is the first significant event for the area this season."

Abnormally high tides are also set to coincide with strong winds and swells of up to four metres or more.

"That can lead to coastal erosion in coastal areas, as well as low-lying inland areas when we see these marine conditions such as high tides coupled with significant rainfall." Ms Boekel said.

"That's when we can see flooding impact low-lying areas."

Conditions aren't expected to change until Tuesday.
