South-east NSW set for more bad weather

After two days of fierce winds, the Bureau of Meteorology is predicting a calmer day for Sydney and Wollongong on Thursday.

But residents in south-east NSW are being warned gale-force winds and even blizzards could be on the way.

Large swathes of the state have been taking a battering since Tuesday, with strong winds sparking more than 1200 calls for help and sending a wall crashing down on a worker in the southern highlands.

The man in his 50s was trapped for more than 90 minutes after a wall fell on him in Mittagong just after midday on Wednesday, and was airlifted to Liverpool Hospital in a serious condition.

Kurnell in southern Sydney, Sydney Airport and Albion Park near Wollongong all recorded wind gusts of about 90 km/h on Wednesday.

The Bureau of Meteorology has now cancelled a severe weather warning for parts of the metropolitan, Illawarra, central tablelands and southern tablelands districts.

But damaging winds and gusts of 90km/h are forecast for higher altitudes on the south coast, Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory through Thursday.

Alpine peaks may experience winds around 70km/h with peak gusts around 110km/h, the Bureau said.

"A weaker cold front moving through Victoria is expected to bring strong to gale-force winds to the higher parts of the south-east during Thursday," the Bureau said.

"The gales will combine with snowfall over the Snowy Mountains to produce blizzard conditions."
