One-in-ten chance power will be switched off for South Australians this summer

South Australians face a one-in-ten chance that power will be switched off this summer to cope with demand.

The threat of load shedding was revealed in the latest national energy market operator's report, leaving the local business community concerned about the damage it may cause.

"Perceptually, brand damage ... it hurts the state but there's also the interruption to business and their operating environment, so we don't want to see it," Anthony Penney from Business SA said.

Premier Steven Marshall conceded it's going to be a testing three months.

"I'm convinced that we've done everything that we possibly can here in South Australia, especially with the situation we were left by the previous government," Mr Marshall said.

The market operator also revealed that on average last financial year, South Australia still had the country's highest wholesale electricity price, despite an 11 percent drop.

The high prices are another factor hurting many businesses.

"Energy costs are the number one issue impacting their business. So we need to see further cost relief," Mr Penney said.

The government says it's working on possible fixes including building another electricity inter-connector across the border.

"The inter-connector with New South Wales is going to be necessary to get South Australia back to where it needs to be with regards affordable, reliable electricity," Energy Minister Dan van Holst Pellekaan said.

But the state opposition says it could have the opposite effect.

"What we will see is generation in South Australia close. We'll become more reliant on a extension cord into New South Wales and Victoria," Tom Koutsantonis said.
