Two 'heroes' praised after 90-year-old woman carried out of blazing home

A 25-year-old man and a police officer have been praised as heroes after saving an elderly woman from a unit fire in Adelaide early this morning.

At about 12.30am, emergency services were called to Military Road in Semaphore South.

Patrols quickly arrived and saw flames coming from the unit.

Inside, 90-year-old Lorraine was at the front door, but she was unable to get out due to mobility issues, police said.

Local residents said she had been on the floor inside, but managed to get up and unlock the door.

The woman is believed to have crawled on her hands and knees to the front door.

Her 25-year-old neighbour, Matt, is then believed to have rushed inside the burning home to save her.

"He's a deadset hero," witness Greg Ireland said.

An officer entered also arrived at the burning home and helped to carry the 90-year-old woman down the street, away from the fire.

Occupants of nearby units were also evacuated, but the fire was contained to just the one residence.

The 90-year-old woman suffered non-life threatening smoke inhalation and she was taken to hospital for observation.

The police officer was assessed at the scene for minor smoke inhalation.

The fire is non-suspicious, and is believed to have been started by an electrical fault.

The woman's apartment was completely destroyed by the fire.

9News understands there was no working smoke alarm in the unit at the time of the fire.
