‘I’ve got to save you’: Fur seal found on side of the road in South Australia

Looking very sorry for himself, this little seal pup is a long way from home.

The long-nosed fur seal was spotted on Hindmarsh Island in South Australia by local tour guide Sally Grundy in yesterday's pouring rain.

“He wasn't agitated or anything. He came over to me and he just looked up at me with those beautiful cute eyes and I thought, right I've got to do something to save you,” Ms Grundy told 9News.

With two interstate visitors in tow, Ms Grundy grabbed a bag from her car before embarking on the unique rescue mission.

The trio transported their new-found friend to nearby Mundoo Island to join a local population of fur seals.

With a nudge at the water’s edge, the lost seal was home again.

There are around 100,000 long-nosed fur seals that call the waters along South Australia's coast home.

It’s an animal population that's still recovering after almost becoming extinct in the early 19th century.
